Living with the River
Kaell Architecte
Description
The 2021 floods left this modest 1930s townhouse in Pfaffenthal uninhabitable. Located along the Alzette in a flood-prone area, the project addresses a dual challenge: ensuring resilience to recurring flooding while enhancing spatial quality. Rather than excluding water, the intervention engages with it through a controlled, resilient ground floor and an integrated drainage strategy. Simultaneously, the house is opened towards the landscape, replacing an inward-looking extension with a spatially continuous and outward-oriented living environment. A careful balance of mineral, timber, and metal elements reinforces both robustness and lightness.
