Description
This new apartment building is Andrew Phillips’s first realised project in Luxembourg. It is one of ten in the first phase of his residential master plan for Cloche d’Or. The building provides 17 apartments arranged over six upper floors and a bank at street level. It sits within a terrace overlooking Boulevard Kockelscheuer to the south, a major new artery into the new district.
The residential part of the building is entered from a courtyard garden. The common areas are arranged as a day-lit circulation around the elevator shaft. Most apartments are dual aspect with simple, efficient floor plans.
A stack of colonnaded balconies, with slender twisted columns, provides a sun, acoustic and privacy screen between the apartments and the street. White pre-cast concrete columns prop the horizontal terraces in a simple tectonic way, changing proportion as they rise through the building. This relatively deep façade assembly provides a generous three-dimensional quality. The rigour of this design is balanced by mutable shadows and light.
Architectural clarity, proportions and refined detailing present an elegant face to the city.
